Cystinosis is a rare inherited condition that affects the kidneys and eyes.

Cystinosis affects around 1 in 200,000 people in the UK. Two or three new cases are diagnosed each year. It is usually first diagnosed in children aged under 2 years old.

Cystinosis is caused by a build-up of an amino acid called cystine in the body. This causes the kidneys to leak essential salt, water and potassium, which can eventually lead to kidney failure.
