Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA)

Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is a type of tubulopathy - a group of rare kidney conditions that affects the tubes (tubules) in the kidneys’ filters (the nephrons). Tubulopathies occur when there is a problem with the tubules which makes them not work as they should do.

Distal – away from the centre

Renal – to do with the kidneys

Tubular – the tubes of the kidneys

Acidosis – a build-up of acid

In dRTA the part of the tubules that is affected is called the collecting duct.

dRTA affects around 1 in 10,000 children in the UK.
