Most children with PUJ dysfunction do not have any symptoms but may have an increased risk of developing a urinary tract infection where symptoms can include:
- fever
- vomiting
- pain on passing urine
- abdominal or back pain
- needing to pass urine (wee) more frequently
- bloody or cloudy urine
- feeling like the bladder is never empty, even after passing urine
In rare cases, older children may have symptoms relating to the obstruction to the flow of urine, including pain in the loin (side of the tummy) or blood in the urine (haematuria). Contact your doctor if you think that your child may have these symptoms. If you cannot reach your doctor straight away, contact NHS 111 or your local out-of-hours GP service.
